It is caused of geographical, historical, political and social aspects after 1824. The differences between Bahasa Indonesia and Malay (Malaysian) are actually not too much. If we do not know how to spell in both two variants, it could be a fatal mistake. Indonesians follow identical to Dutch or Romance languages, while Malaysians follow English rule. Some are different spellings, even how to pronounce alphabets. Most of the time we can understand each other, but there are several misunderstanding related to the vocabularies. Linguistically we can say mutually intelligible, our languages are derived from the same root, High Malay which developed from Johor-Riau Sultanate (divided into Malaysia-Singapore-Indonesia nowadays). This is what I think when for the first time I met Malaysians.
